Creature Design

Lately, I have found myself  getting more and more fascinated by artists who work with creature design, such as Terryl Whitlatch, who is considered to be one of the best creature designers and animal anatomist in the world.

Terryl Whitlatch has worked on many projects, including Star Wars. Terryl is also the author of two books, “The Wildlife of Star Wars” and “The Katurran Odyssey," volume one of the series “The Katurran Trilogy." In addition, Terryl is involved with several other book and film concepts, as well as teaching Creature Design and Construction/Anatomy at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.

It isn't very often I buy an art book that isn't an instructional book, because as most artists I am on a limit budget, but after I found some free creature design demonstrations by Terryl, I just couldn't help myself and bought her book Animals, Real and Imagined.  Although this isn't and instructional book it contains a lot of sketches as well as finished art works, that gives you an idea of how you can go about turning real animals into fantasy creatures.

You will find Terryl's free creature design demonstrations at :http://online.academyart.edu
